OnGuard: Reduce Barking at the Front Door

Stop the Barking at the Front Door

A simple guide to claiming your space and quieting the chaos.

Barking at the front door is an especially tough situation. I understand how frustrating it can be—it's one of the most common problems among dog owners. But first things first: relax.

Pro Tip: Whenever you are training your dog, stay calm! Dogs feed off your energy; they can practically "smell" it. You need to be confident and consistent. If you give in, your dog will take advantage.

OnGuard Device

Using the OnGuard™ Handheld Trainer makes this process much easier. Here are the steps to follow:

The 4-Step Training Method

  1. 1 Give the Command Give your verbal command to reduce the barking, such as "Quiet" or "Reduce barking."
  2. 2 Claim Your Space If your dog doesn't listen, calmly stand between your dog and the door (or whatever he is barking at). You need to get his attention. Do not yell, as this only raises his energy level. Show your dog the OnGuard device once you have his attention.
  3. 3 Correct with OnGuard If the pup barks again, press and hold the ultrasonic sound button for 10 seconds. Take a giant step forward into their personal space, making sure to block their path so they can't go around you.
  4. 4 Reward or Repeat
    • If they scoot back: Great! Give a reward (a treat or a calm head rub).
    • If they don't stop: Repeat the process. Walk them backward across the room—one step at a time if needed—until they yield the space to you.

Why This Works

Right now, your dog thinks he is in charge of defending the roost. With this training, you are claiming the area as yours. You are teaching them that you are the leader and you are in control of the situation.

Consistency is key. Remember that your dog has probably been doing this unfavorable behavior for a while. It's become a habit, so it may take a few weeks to fully make your dog understand.
